autumn...quickly because i have too many other things i need to get done. :)

tonight i pulled a super yummy beef stew out of my arse:
i threw some beef in flour and then seared it in ev olive oil in my stew pot...i threw in some red wine, an onion and, a little later, some veg stock...added a handful of fresh savory, all chopped up and some fresh rosemary, too...then some carrots, portabellas, red cabbage and spinach...oh! and some finely chopped garlic, the juice of a lemon, and more than a touch of bragg's. then i put the lentals in. on low heat i simmered it for a while and then i added more flour (all flour used is unbleached, unbromated whole wheat) and some earth balance to thicken it as it cooked. it is WICKED yummy. baby django kept saying "yummy" as i fed it to him. from the mouths of a babe...it must be good!

heatwave...

it has been so hot in maine this week. i have been trying to find a pocket of cool air somewhere, anywhere...the air has been hot. heavy. like pudding. who the hell wants to eat, let alone COOK in weather like this??

working at the Cape Arundel Inn throughout this heat wave gave me some great ideas for food to prepare for such hot weather. chilled food. and of course, delicious food.

some of the featured items this week:
gazpacho. a to die for garden vegetable tomato based soup slightly spiced with shaved aged cheese and croutons and balsamic honey drizzle. i like mine really spicy...and spice makes your body cool down. perfect.

fried green tomatoes with this AMAZING creamy basil dressing. a recipe i vow to get for us all.

chilled beef that has been cooked medium rare with heirloom tomato salsa, paired with a chilled red potato lobster salad.

chilled food. it's smart and you can cook it in the early hours of a day you know is going to be hot and leave it in the fridge until late in the day when you wouldn't want the oven or grill on. it's a great idea if you work all day, too...and don't feel like expending energy when you retun home all tired and shriveled and sweaty.

<3 i work with some brilliant foodies, for sure. <3
